Status in travel is usually described in brands. It is better understood as barriers — and there are only two kinds. The ones that publish a threshold you can clear, and the ones that publish nothing at all.
A published barrier is a contract. Singapore's passport reaches 192 destinations, Gustaf III has 640 metres of runway, Mykonos charges €20 to step off a cruise ship. You can look these up, plan around them and clear them. They reward knowledge.
An unpublished barrier states nothing. American Airlines will not say what earns ConciergeKey. Augusta National has no application form. Lufthansa lets an Amex Centurion card into the First Class Lounge and not into the First Class Terminal. No amount of research clears these, because research is not the mechanism — they reward being known.
A third, smaller group is neither: signals that are simply read — a worn aluminium case, a GMT hand actually set. Those pages carry no figures at all, and say so.
