Private Aviation

Published barrier

St. Barts has a runway of about 640 metres, approached over a hillside and ending at a beach. No jet can use it. If you own one, it lands in Sint Maarten and you get into a turboprop like everybody else.

What is actually going on

Private aviation removes almost every friction in travel: the queue, the schedule, the terminal. What it cannot remove is physics. Gustaf III Airport on St. Barts has roughly 640 metres of asphalt, a steep approach over a ridge, and pilots require a specific certification to fly it at all.

The consequence is visible on the ground. No high-rises, no mega-resorts, no cruise berth — the island’s entire scale follows from what can physically land on it.

Every other barrier in this list can be cleared with enough money, enough time, or the right relationship. This one is arithmetic, and it is the reason the category is worth understanding rather than simply envying.

The difference people notice

Reads as fluent

  • Knowing the runway is why the island looks the way it does.
  • Being relaxed about the approach. The pilots fly it several times a day.
  • Flying into Toulon rather than Nice for Saint-Tropez — the same logic, applied to a coast.

Reads as trying

  • Being surprised there is no jet service. It is the best-documented fact about the place.
  • Treating a private flight as a status object rather than a tool.
  • Booking the aircraft before checking the runway.

Editorial judgement, not measurement — unlike the figures above, nobody publishes this.
