The Snow

Published barrier

Ski status is not the resort, the chalet or the pass. It is the month. Siberian air crossing the Sea of Japan drops 14 to 15 metres of dry snow on Hokkaido a season, most of it in January, and that cannot be built.

What is actually going on

Niseko averages 14–15 metres of snowfall a year. January alone typically delivers 20 or more snow days, with village snow depths around three metres by mid-month. It falls dry because the air arrives from Siberia and the temperature stays well below freezing.

The barrier here is a date rather than a door. Anybody can reach Niseko; not everybody can reach it in January, because that is the month that books a year out.

It is the clearest example of a status good that is entirely natural. No operator created it, no membership controls it, and the only way to secure it is to commit twelve months ahead to a week of weather nobody can promise.

The difference people notice

Reads as fluent

  • Booking January a year out and accepting you may not see the mountain all week.
  • Choosing the transfer as carefully as the flight — 110 km from New Chitose is two hours of your first day.
  • Going back in summer, when the same valley is green and empty.

Reads as trying

  • Booking February and expecting January.
  • Turning up without knowing which of the linked areas your pass covers.
  • Calling it a cultural trip. In winter it is an international resort town that happens to be in Japan.

Editorial judgement, not measurement — unlike the figures above, nobody publishes this.
