A hundred-odd miles from Manhattan: most of an afternoon by car on a summer Friday, well under an hour by helicopter. The gap between those two numbers is the entire social technology of the Hamptons.
Prestige is usually described in adjectives. These are the parts of it you can check.
Distance from Manhattan is fixed. How long it takes you is not, and it is purchasable. Blade runs a scheduled, by-the-seat helicopter and seaplane service from Manhattan heliports through the summer — broadly Memorial Day to Labor Day — and the flight is a fraction of the drive. Everyone else does Route 27 on a Friday afternoon.
Which is why the fight over East Hampton’s airport has been the defining local story of the past four years. The town board voted in February 2022 to deactivate the airport and reopen it as a private, prior-permission-required field under the identifier JPX. A court injunction blocked the change, and in April 2024 the New York Appellate Division upheld that injunction — it remains charted as a public-use airport. Framed as a noise dispute, it is really an argument about who is allowed to skip the traffic, which makes it the most honest planning fight in American resort travel.
The other local coordinate is the road itself. “The highway” means Montauk Highway, Route 27, and south of it is the ocean side: tighter inventory, higher prices, heavier regulation. An address is described by which side of that line it is on before it is described by anything else.
