Koh Samui

Gulf of Thailand

In 2025 The White Lotus put Koh Samui on television and its search demand went vertical. The status move on the island is no longer the famous resort — it is knowing Samui well enough to be somewhere else on it.

The barrier, measured

USM
Samui International — Thailand’s first privately owned airport, low-rise and capacity-constrained. That constraint is why Samui is not Phuket.
+65%
The spike in searches for the resort used as The White Lotus season 3 location after it aired in 2025, per Hotels.com. Koh Samui overall rose about 40%.
Oct – Dec
Samui’s wet season, peaking in November — the opposite of the Andaman coast, which is dry and at its best in exactly those months.

Prestige is usually described in adjectives. These are the parts of it you can check.

Why Koh Samui carries the weight it does

Samui was the quiet one. A Thai island with its own airport, a small stock of serious resorts, and none of Phuket’s volume — and the airport is the reason. Samui International (USM) was Thailand’s first privately owned airport, deliberately low-rise, open-air and capacity-constrained. Constraint is why Samui never became Phuket.

Then The White Lotus filmed its third season there. After it aired in 2025, Hotels.com reported a 65% spike in searches for the resort used as the primary location and a 40% rise for Koh Samui overall; travel sellers reported very large jumps in Thailand bookings. The two previous seasons did the same thing to Maui and to Sicily.

So Samui is the inverse case on this list. Everywhere else, prestige is protected by a barrier. Here the barrier held for thirty years and then a television show walked straight past it. What is left is knowledge: the island is considerably bigger and more varied than the strip everyone now searches for, and its weather runs on a different calendar from the Thailand most people have been to.

The difference a local notices

Reads as insider

  • Knowing the island past Chaweng and Bophut. The south and west coasts are effectively a different island.
  • Getting the monsoon calendar right. Samui is in the Gulf, so it is wettest from October to December, while the Andaman coast is dry.
  • Treating the set-jetting as a curiosity rather than the itinerary.
  • Pairing Samui with the Gulf islands rather than with Phuket, so one trip does not straddle two opposite weather systems.

Reads as first visit

  • Booking the resort from the show and calling it a discovery.
  • Assuming Samui’s weather matches Phuket’s. It does not, and November is the trap.
  • Flying into Bangkok without checking what the Samui connection costs.
  • Planning a Thailand trip on a single weather calendar.

Editorial judgement, not measurement — unlike the figures above, nobody publishes this.

Questions

Did The White Lotus change Koh Samui?
Measurably. After the third season aired in 2025, Hotels.com reported a 65% jump in searches for the resort used as the primary location and roughly 40% for Koh Samui as a whole, and travel sellers reported very large increases in Thailand bookings. The first two seasons produced comparable surges for Maui and Sicily.
When is the best time to visit Koh Samui?
Not the same months as Phuket. Samui sits in the Gulf of Thailand and is wettest from October to December, with November the worst of it — precisely when the Andaman coast is dry and at its best. Roughly January to September is Samui’s better window.
Why is Koh Samui less developed than Phuket?
Largely the airport. Samui International (USM) was Thailand’s first privately owned airport and is deliberately small, low-rise and capacity-constrained, which caps arrivals in a way Phuket’s never has.
Where were The White Lotus Thailand scenes filmed?
Across Koh Samui, Phuket and Bangkok. Venture maps every confirmed location in the series, including the nine on Koh Samui itself.
